Microchipping gives your pet the best chance of being reunited with you if they ever get lost or escape.
If you pet ever becomes lost or escapes the backyard, a microchip has your details so you can be reunited. It’s important to make sure your details are kept up to date, especially your phone number as this is usually the first way to contact you.
In most states and territories microchipping is mandatory for cats and dogs and should already come microchipped from the breeder or rescue company. Microchipping is mandatory for Victoria.
A microchip is a permanent method of identification. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted with a needle under the skin between the shoulder blades at the back of your pet’s neck. Although sometimes the chip can travel but will still be around the neck or front legs.
Each chip has a unique 15 digit number that can be detected by a microchip scanner. This number is recorded on a microchip database registry which has details about the pet and the owner who it’s registered too.
When you adopt or buy your new pet it is important to fill in the change of ownership details so your pet is registered with your details and not the previous owner otherwise they will get the call that they have been found.
You need to contact your pets microchip registry – if you are unsure who your pet is registered with you can go to www.petaddress.com.au and enter your pets microchip number to check. Some registries you can update online, others you will need to call and let them know.
If you cannot find your pet’s registry by searching on Pet Address, please contact us to find out which database your pet is listed with.
There are 2 companies that do not show up on the above website and should be registered with one of the other registry companies. Please contact us to do this for you. Also some Greyhounds will only be registered with the Greyhound Racing Victoria registry.
All pets should be microchipped before you purchase or adopt your pet. However, if your pet is not yet microchipped then you can make an appointment with us to have your pet microchipped. We will check if they are chipped at their first appointment with us.
